Previous seasons
The Buffalo Bills are a long time removed from their glory days, if you could call them glory days. The team did accomplish one of the more incredible feats when they won four straight AFC Championships and earned themselves four trips to the Super Bowl from 1990-’93. The other side of that coin is that the team lost in each one of their Super Bowl appearances, including getting beat by the Dallas Cowboys twice, the first time 52-17 and the second time 30-13. The team got closest to winning the first time they made it to the big game. They found themselves down 20-19 with: 07 left on the clock and sent out kicker Scott Norwood to attempt a 47 yard field goal for the win. Norwood ended up missing wide right and that moment is still one that haunts Bills fans to this day.
In more recent memory, the Bills haven't even had the chance to experience that kind of disappointment. The team hasn’t made the playoffs since 1999 and they waived their franchise player Drew Bledsoe in the off-season. They also have a new coach who went 9-7 in his first season and a new quarterback in J.P. Losman and a new running back in Willis McGahee. The team has gotten much younger in the past few seasons, but they still had a number of positions that the team needed to address in the off-season.
In the spring, the Bills needed to go out and get some players to sure up the offensive line and they did just that when they signed tackle Mike Gandy and guard Bennie Anderson. Gandy, who was formerly with the Bears, is a big young tackle who has a bright future ahead of him. He could be one of the bookend tackles for the start of McGahee’s bright career. The team also brought in former Cleveland Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb. Holcomb is a very good backup quarterback and is also one of the toughest guys you’ll find at that position. During the 2003 season, he played a game on a broken leg and during that game he completed 11 consecutive passes and threw two touchdowns in the 4th quarter alone. So if Losman goes down, a tank will be needed to take their second string QB out of the game.
In the draft, the Bills didn’t have the first round pick that most teams are accustomed to. The year before they traded their 2005 first round choice to the Cowboys for their first round pick. With that pick they grabbed Losman. So for all practical purposes, you can say he was taken with that pick. With their second round pick, the Bills took Miami (Fl.) wide receiver Roscoe Parrish. Parrish is a little undersized to be an NFL receiver, but he more than makes up for it with his speed and agility. He is also a hard-nosed guy that can go over the middle and make a catch knowing a big hit is going to be put on him.
Critics considered the Bills as a scrappy team that was set for improvement in the 07/08 season. But – and this is a big one – how can there be improvement in a team that lost their top three defensive players, TKO Spikes, Nate Clements, and London Fletcher from a unit that was already 18th in the league? Buffalo has a lot of heart, but they are coming back with less talent and more injuries. They are, however, building up to former glory, with Marv Levy and Dick Jauron laying down a strong foundation. The offense looks stronger with Derrick Docker, Langston Walker and Jason Whittle. QB JP Losman has had some explosive moments on the field as well. Despite the problems, Bills ticket buyers can definitely expect surprises and improvement this season
At the End of the 07 Season, Head Coach Marv Levy again retired; reaching the end of his two year agreement. OC Steve Fairchild left to become Head Coach of Colorado State University. Assistant Coach Dick Jauron took the reigns as the Head Coach and Turk Schonert was hired on as the new Offensive Coordinator. The team again failed to secure a playoff berth and finished 7-9 for the 4th season in a row and in 4th place in the AFC East. QB JP Losman, who was knocked out of a game on September 23, was never able to get the starting job back from backup Trent Edwards. When Losman was able to return, Coach Jauron decided to keep Edwards in the lineup sparking a locker room controversy as Losman’s teammates began to publicly complain that team owner Ralph Wilson Jr. was holding him out in order for Losman to not reach the milestones stated in his contract in order to receive his bonus.
The offseason proved just as controversial as the team allowed Losman to leave as a free agent and turned around and picked up oft criticized but uber talented WR Terrell Owens. They also signed Drayton Florence from the Jaguars, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Bengals, Center Geoff Hangartner form the Panthers and RB Dominic Rhodes from the Colts. In addition to the loss of Losman, the team also lost fantastic OG Derrick Dockery who went back to the Redskins. Robert Royal was released and LT Jason Peters was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Look for the reloaded Bills to try and push past the 7-9 mark and make the playoffs for the first time in 5 seasons.
